Hit US TV show Extreme Makeover Home Edition – EMHE – helps turn dreams into reality for deserving families across America.
Combining the creative ideas of their top designers, the fabrication and installation skills of their team of craftsmen and, recently the creative strength and versatility of Perspex® Frost (known as LuciteLux® Frost in the US), the well known makeover show was able to weave its magic for 6 year old Ryanne Carr.
Dream room
Despite the loss of her legs, young Ryanne’s dream was to surf, which set the EMHE designers a tough challenge – to create an ocean wave in the little girl’s bedroom.
Whilst Ryanne and her family took a holiday to try out some real surfing, the EMHE team had a short period in which to create Ryanne’s dream bedroom – which is where Perspex® and the manufacturing and technical team at Lucite International in Cordova Tennessee came in.
The design team chose different shades of Perspex® Frost, reminiscent of the blues of the ocean, to create the indoor “wave”.
Each colour was cut to shape and layered together to give just the right watery, 3-D effect of a wave right in Ryanne’s bedroom.
Team work
Lucite International became involved when the show’s design team called Texas-based supplier and fabricator, SABIC Polymer Shapes, who in turn contacted Lucite International in Tennessee.
Working together the Perspex® manufacturing and production teams were able to quickly supply 12 sheets of Perspex® Frost in Sapphire Blue, Electric Blue and Perspex® Fluorescent Neptune Blue – perfect for creating the different shades of the ocean.
A great result
“When we were contacted by EMHE, I knew we could help create, design and fabricate the Perspex® sheet to form a wave. With everyone working together, the project worked out perfectly,” said Mark Denning, site manager for SABIC Polymer Shapes.
Chris Robinson, cast sheet manager for Lucite International in the US, was also pleased with the result; “We were thrilled and humbled that EMHE wanted to use Perspex®. It’s a great example of how the power of a designer’s imagination can bring a truly unique product to life”
