Perspex® S-Lux warning signs help increase pedestrian safety in Germany

08/04/2010

Pedestrians in Germany who need to cross tram lines or rail crossings can be safer, thanks to an innovative new warning sign developed by German manufacturer, probitron.

Based in Bielefeld in north-west Germany, probitron specialise in the production of mechanical and electronic systems and services for the road safety industry. Their latest road safety product - Light Panel LP500 – is a floor level warning sign made using patented Perspex® S-Lux acrylic sheet.

Pedestrian safety

In towns and cities where tram or rail lines cross busy pedestrian areas, the issue of safety is a key consideration for town planners, local authorities and traffic organisations. With the new LP500, probitron have developed a floor level warning system that lights up when a tram or train is approaching and alerts the pedestrian.

Being set into the pavement, the panel is easy to see - especially by elderly or younger pedestrians and cyclists who may have their attention focused at floor level.

Bright and hard wearing

The LP500 sign uses a panel of 8mm thick Perspex® S–Lux set into a stainless steel frame and lit by LED lights. The warning signs can be customised and printed on to the panel and the whole unit is set neatly into the paving slabs.

The combination of a flashing illuminated sign and the hardwearing construction means that the units are both easy to see and extremely robust - perfect for a busy city centre or urban environment.

Safe and cost effective

S Lux probitron sign daylightPerspex® S–Lux is ideal for this type of application as it offers excellent visibility, when lit or unlit, and is also tough and hard wearing. Since the units were introduced early in 2009, they have been used in several locations across Germany. It is hoped that their use will lead to greater safety for pedestrians and cyclists at level crossings, particularly in accident hot-spots.

The units can be made to order and installed by probitron. They are of course easy to fit during road construction, but are also very easy to retro-fit in existing roads and pavements, making them an economic way to improve pedestrian safety anywhere.
