Perspex® stylish staircase solution
Perspex® clear acrylic sheet has been used by interiors designer Sarah George of Saxum for a stunning staircase in a new development of luxury apartments in London’s fashionable Islington.
Working with Perspex® fabricators QD Plastics, Sarah designed the staircase for project architect Simon Graham of Tasou Associates – leading architects/structural engineers who have a number of developments in the capital city.
Simon saw a Perspex® and steel ladder that Sarah had designed for a children’s bedroom and immediately saw the opportunity to use Perspex® from Lucite® in the Islington project.
The development – a former factory and music studio- includes a number of individually designed apartments which make maximum use of the space and light available - thanks in part to the clever use of modern materials such as Perspex®. Apartment 9 has an open-plan living room, overlooked by a narrow gallery which is accessed by the superb steel and clear Perspex® staircase.
Sarah’s association with QD plastics began after they met at an exhibition in Birmingham where both were exhibiting.
“I liked their energy and perfection and was impressed with their knowledge and expertise “she observes “and this gave me the confidence to design and use Perspex®. I was reassured that QD Plastics would only recommend using real Perspex® acrylic sheet, as I fell in love with Perspex® at Art School where I used it in a number of my designs.”
“When I was commissioned to create the staircase, Perspex® was the natural choice, especially for apartments where high quality and a stylish look was of such critical importance,” she concludes.
Working together with QD Plastics, Sarah has created a staircase that offers an extremely innovative and at the same time almost magical access to mezzanines and loft spaces.
